Google Voice gives you a free US phone number for calls and texts — but here is the catch: to claim your first Voice number, Google requires an existing US phone number to verify with. If you are outside the US, porting in, or simply do not have a US SIM, the standard path is blocked. A virtual US number breaks the deadlock.
The chicken-and-egg problem
Google Voice setup asks for "a US phone number you can use to verify." It accepts mobile numbers — including Google Fi and many MVNOs — but historically rejects VoIP and internet-only lines. That single requirement locks out most international users. The workaround: rent a US virtual number, complete Voice setup, then port or keep the underlying number depending on your needs.
Step by step
- Open Google Voice on AgoVerify and pick a US route.
- Go to voice.google.com, sign in with your Google account, and choose "Get a Voice number" or "Link an existing number" depending on what the flow offers.
- When Google asks for a US number to verify, enter the rented one.
- Receive the SMS code on your order page and enter it.
- Your Voice number is assigned — you can now make and receive calls and texts through the Voice app or website.
Important limitations
- VoIP detection: Google runs carrier lookups. Cheap VoIP inventory gets rejected at the verification step — that is why route quality matters more here than anywhere else.
- Porting out: if you later want the number ported to a real carrier, the number must be port-eligible — temporary verification numbers generally are not.
- Account standing: Google Voice accounts created this way can face extra scrutiny if the account shows other risk signals. Keep the Google account in good standing.
- Geography: Voice is officially US/Canada-only; using it from unsupported regions may hit carrier restrictions on calls.
What people use it for
US-facing businesses needing a local presence, freelancers listing a US contact number, people separating a business identity from their personal SIM, and anyone locked out of Voice by the US-number requirement. For one-off SMS verification needs, Voice is overkill — but for an actual US calling/texting number, it is the cheapest legitimate path.
Cost
The verification number is a one-time purchase — pay with mobile money (MTN MoMo, Orange Money) across African markets. If Google never sends the code, the order refunds automatically at expiry.
