How to Verify Signal Without Your Real Phone Number

01/11/2026

Signal is the most privacy-focused mainstream messenger, and that privacy cuts both ways: your phone number is your account. Lose access to the SIM and you lose the account. Want a second Signal, a fresh identity, or simply refuse to hand your real number to yet another app? A virtual number gets you verified — with caveats worth understanding first.

Why Signal is stricter than most apps

Signal registers numbers directly with carriers and runs its own spam and abuse filtering on top. VoIP and internet-only numbers are frequently rejected at signup with a generic "unable to register" error. Real mobile numbers — the kind carried on actual carrier SIMs — pass far more reliably. This is why cheap public SMS-receiver sites almost never work for Signal: their numbers are burned or VoIP-flagged.

Verifying with a virtual number

  1. Open Signal on AgoVerify and pick a country route — Signal numbers are available across multiple countries.
  2. Install Signal and enter the rented number when it asks for your phone.
  3. Wait for the SMS code to appear on your order page — usually within seconds to a couple of minutes.
  4. Enter the code, set your profile name, and you are in.

If Signal rejects the number, do not retry it — cancel the order for an automatic refund and take a fresh number, preferably on a different country route.

The catch: Signal re-verifies on new devices

Signal ties your identity to the number permanently. Reinstall the app on a new phone, or log in somewhere else, and it will demand an SMS code sent to that number again. A disposable number you no longer hold becomes a locked account. Before relying on a virtual-number Signal long-term:

  • Register a Signal PIN — it protects message history, though it does not replace phone verification.
  • Save your recovery phrase shown during setup.
  • Understand that if the number expires, the account is effectively unrecoverable — treat it as a secondary account, not your primary identity.

When a virtual number is the right call

Signal is an excellent fit for temporary or secondary identities: a business line that is not your personal SIM, a community group admin account, testing, or privacy compartmentalization. It is a poor fit for your only copy of years of private messages — for that, use your real number or a number you can keep.

Paying for it

AgoVerify accepts mobile money — MTN MoMo and Orange Money across African markets — so you can fund verification without a card. If the code never arrives, the order refunds automatically when it expires.
